Portuguese restaurants named among world's best wine and dining locations

Mesa de Lemos in the Dão, Bomfim 1896 in the Douro and Malhadinha Nova in the Alentejo were selected alongside leading winery destinations from around the world, forming part of a wider list of 57 restaurants globally, including 22 in Europe.

The selection focuses on places where the combination of food, wine and setting makes visiting the winery itself worthwhile.

Mesa de Lemos, at Quinta de Lemos near Viseu, holds a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star for sustainability. Chef Diogo Rocha's contemporary Portuguese cooking draws on seasonal produce from across the country, including sea bream from the Algarve and pineapple from the Azores, served in a glazed dining room overlooking the vineyards.

Bomfim 1896, at Quinta do Bomfim on the banks of the Douro in Pinhão, is part of the Symington family's historic Port wine estate. Its kitchen focuses on traditional Douro cooking over wood fires, with dishes rooted in regional family recipes such as smoked eel and slow-roasted kid.

Malhadinha Nova, on the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova estate near Beja, uses much of its own produce, including Alentejo black pigs raised on the property. Its cooking reworks traditional Alentejo recipes into lighter, contemporary dishes, reflecting the estate's broader focus on wine, food and hospitality.

Between them, the three restaurants span three distinct wine regions, from the terraced Douro valley to the rolling Dão hills and the open plains of the Alentejo.

Their recognition on a global stage is a reminder of how much Portugal now has to offer beyond its cities and coastline, with a wine tourism and dining culture that increasingly stands alongside the world's best.
