The German firm Thyssenkrupp Nucera, a world-leading provider of technologies for highly-efficient electrolysis plants, has confirmed it is to establish its first “company-operated, central assembly hub for electrolyser cells” in VGP Park Vila Nova de Gaia – south of Porto.
It has signed a lease agreement on the building, which provides more than 7,500 square metres of space.
It says the hub, into which it is investing between €10-14 million, will enable “faster and more efficient cell assembly while significantly increasing capacity”.
The project is supported by approximately €3.7 million in funding from the Portuguese government under the COMPETE2030 programme.
It is an innovation and digital transition programme in Portugal with a €3.9 billion budget and runs from 2021 to 2027.

It is one of the key thematic programs under the broader Portugal 2030 framework, which applies European Union funds to boost economic, social, and territorial development.
Initially, the firm will assemble cells for alkaline water electrolysis at the site.
Dr Werner Ponikwar, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera said: “The investment in the assembly hub is a clear commitment to Europe as an industrial location and a further contribution to strengthening the European hydrogen economy.”
Construction of the building begins in winter 2026.
Upon completion, cell assembly at the hub will start in 2028. It will serve electrolysis projects across Europe and neighbouring regions.
Starting in 2028, cells for Moeve's Onuba project will initially be assembled there; the first phase of the €1 billion Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley - southern Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen initiative.
