Where buyers once looked almost exclusively at Lisbon, Cascais and the Algarve, the Douro Valley, Comporta and the wider Alentejo are now firmly on the shortlist.
The obvious question is what's driving that spread, and why Portugal keeps winning out over other destinations in the first place.
Safety comes up in almost every buyer conversation, particularly among families relocating internationally. Portugal was ranked the 7th safest country in the world in the 2025 Global Peace Index, and that figure carries real weight for anyone thinking about a move with children or simply wanting a quieter day-to-day life.
Climate and lifestyle follow close behind. More than 300 days of sunshine a year is the standout statistic, but it's the long coastlines, the slower pace outside the main cities and a genuine outdoor culture running through every season that tend to close the deal.
Confidence in the economy has been building quietly alongside all this. The Economist named Portugal its "Economy of the Year" for 2025, pointing to low inflation, steady employment and strong stock market performance. That isn't usually what first draws buyers to Portugal, but it's increasingly what makes them comfortable following through.

"We're seeing buyers who might once have gone straight to the South of France or Italy now taking Portugal seriously as a long-term base, not just a holiday option," said Paul Stannard, chairman and founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club.
Value plays a part too. Against comparable lifestyle destinations elsewhere in Western Europe or the US, Portugal still offers relative value, even with domestic prices rising. Luxury buyers aren't chasing a bargain as such, but many find their budget goes further here than they expected.
Speak to enough buyers and a clear pattern emerges. Nobody relocates to Portugal for one reason alone. Safety, climate, quality of life and a sense of economic momentum tend to arrive together, and it's that combination that's now pulling in buyers who might once have settled elsewhere in Europe.
That shift is reshaping the luxury sector itself. Developers are responding with branded residences, resort-style living and new-builds finished to a standard that was far less common just a few years ago.
