Nobu, founded by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and film producer Meir Teper, plans a major development at the 1,000-acre Monte Rei golfing and country club near Vila Nova de Cacela.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with a 2029 opening, and the complex will include around 21,000 square metres of Nobu villas and branded residences alongside a 100-room hotel and signature Nobu restaurant.
Monte Rei is an established international draw to UHNW individuals, largely thanks to its Jack Nicklaus designed golf course – rated as Portugal’s best – but property market watchers believe Nobu’s arrival will signal the country’s long-term potential for luxury site developers.
Nobu has 50 restaurants and 19 hotels globally including European sites operating in the UK, Spain, Italy, Monaco, Poland, Hungary and Turkey. Monte Rei now reaffirms Nobu’s confidence in Portugal after plans were announced in 2023 for a hotel and restaurant under development on Lisbon’s prestigious Avenida da Liberdade.
Paul Stannard, Chairman and Founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club, commented: “Development of branded residences is particularly significant for property investors as they give residential schemes an instantly recognisable identity – buyers are not simply being offered a home but access to a lifestyle proposition built around hospitality, service and leisure.

“This model is increasingly prominent in international luxury property markets and expansion in Portugal by Nobu suggests the country is becoming part of that global ecosystem.”
He noted that the Western Algarve has traditionally dominated the region’s luxury property market, with established destinations such as Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo attracting wealthy international buyers.
But Monte Rei, in the quieter Eastern Algarve, close to the Spanish border and surrounded by countryside, is already established as a high-end destination; Nobu’s arrival could be a considerable further boost international profile.
Stannard added: “It could be crucial to Portugal’s luxury property sector. As established locations become increasingly mature, less-developed areas with space, privacy and high-quality infrastructure can offer a new proposition for both developers and buyers.
“The wider significance of the Nobu announcement is how Portugal is now attracting luxury brands that have traditionally concentrated on Europe's established premium destinations.
“For international property buyers, that strengthens the country's proposition: climate, lifestyle and relatively easy access to the rest of Europe, plus good international air links.
“Shrewd investors will surely see the Nobu project as another indicator of Portugal’s luxury property market trajectory.”
