A record wave of US citizens is departing the United States, driven by a climate of political and economic uncertainty.
More Americans are now looking abroad for stability and peace of mind, with Portugal emerging as a particularly popular destination.
Recent figures highlight the scale of this shift. Since 2020, the number of Americans residing in Portugal has surged by over 500%, including a 36% rise during 2024 alone. Today, the total exceeds 25,000 US nationals living in the country.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the trend has accelerated significantly during President Trump’s second term, prompting some to dub the movement the ‘Donald Dash’. The publication estimates that at least 180,000 Americans left the US last year.
The report suggests this growing migration has been gathering pace for several years, driven by “the rise of remote work, mounting living costs and an appetite for foreign lifestyles that feel within reach, especially in Europe”.
