Portugal’s aviation sector delivered another year of solid growth in 2025, reinforcing the country’s strategic position as a gateway between Europe, the Americas and beyond.
Preliminary data released this month by Statistics Portugal show that passenger movement at national airports rose by 4.7% in 2025, underlining sustained demand for travel to and from Portugal and supporting the broader tourism, real estate and services sectors.
In December 2025 alone, 4.9 million passengers passed through Portugal’s national airports, a 4.6% increase compared to December 2024.
The data also shows a daily average of 82,100 disembarked passengers during the month, significantly above the approximate 78,000 recorded a year earlier, representing a 5.2% increase.
This consistent year-on-year expansion highlights Portugal’s enduring appeal as both a leisure and business destination, even during the traditionally quieter winter period.
Across the full year, passenger traffic increased by 4.7%, building on 4.3% growth recorded in 2024.

For investors and policymakers alike, this steady trajectory signals structural strength rather than short-term volatility.
Air connectivity remains a fundamental pillar of Portugal’s economic model. Strong passenger growth supports tourism revenues, foreign direct investment, and international trade.
As Portugal continues to position itself as a competitive European base for technology, renewable energy, and international business services, aviation performance is a critical enabler.
The ranking of Portugal’s five main countries of origin and destination remained unchanged in 2025.
The United Kingdom retained its position as Portugal’s leading aviation partner, recording increases of 2.4% in disembarked passengers and 2.2% in embarked passengers.

The continued strength of UK-Portugal routes reflects deep tourism, real estate and business ties.
France remained in second place, despite slight declines in passenger numbers (–2.3% disembarked and –1.9% embarked), demonstrating the maturity of this long-standing market.
Spain, Germany and Italy completed the top five, underlining Portugal’s strong integration within key European economies.
This diversified demand base is particularly important in the current global environment. Rather than over-reliance on a single market, Portugal benefits from a broad and stable mix of European partners.
As infrastructure upgrades and airport expansion projects continue to advance, the outlook for 2026 and beyond remains positive.
For investors evaluating opportunities across hospitality, real estate, logistics and services, Portugal’s aviation performance provides yet another indicator of long-term structural strength.
