Important Update on Media Speculation and Draft Discussions on Potential Portugal Citizenship Changes
This webinar with leading Portuguese immigration lawyers involved in a government task force explored the potential change in citizenship requirements from 5 to 10 years, highlighting that early planning with trusted partners ensures optimal outcomes for families and their investments.
In light of recent media reports in the last few days regarding a draft proposal that may affect the future timeline for acquiring permanent residency or citizenship in Portugal, we want to update you with some important context and guidance.
In case you are unaware, the draft and media reports indicate that permanent residency in Portugal, in some circumstances, may move from 5 years to 10 years.
Firstly, this is only a draft, and no law has been passed, so please be careful when people make statements of fact in the media. Nothing has changed, and it is all conjecture until someone puts something to parliament and puts it into law, which will take time, even if changes are made.
As always, Portugal’s approach has historically been measured and practical, particularly when it comes to those who contribute to the country through investment, cultural integration, innovation, and long-term engagement.
Portugal Pathways is in close contact with the senior immigration lawyers and financial advisors in Portugal who are actively involved in a government task force shaping this draft to ensure it is fair.
Their collective focus is on ensuring that investors, entrepreneurs, discerning families and value creators — like the members of our Portugal Pathways community — are protected and given clear, workable outcomes that will never be retrospective to those who have already shown intent to Portugal through life, residency, tax and or investment.
We continue to believe that individuals who take advice, plan, and act early before any draft becomes law will remain strongly protected — especially under Golden Visa provisions and constitutional rights regarding legitimate expectations and legal certainty.
The best course of action is to remain informed through Portugal Pathways experts and take early steps where appropriate.
This webinar discussion includes a panel with a professional partner involved in this task force so you can ask questions, whilst gaining clarity and peace of mind.
