Escape to Sintra: Exploring Portugal's fairy-tale town

Escape to Sintra: Exploring Portugal's fairy-tale town

A UNESCO World Heritage site on the outskirts of Lisbon, Sintra offers a unique getaway from the bustling city.

Home to the former royal family residence of Palácio Nacional de Sintra (Sintra National Palace), this mountainous region offers an alternative to the built-up beach towns and resorts such as the nearby Cascais or the numerous options in the Algarve.

A landscape dotted with majestic palaces, castles, and lush gardens, Sintra creates a harmonious blend between the area’s Moorish history and the surrounding natural environment. Not surprisingly, it’s been a big draw to expats.

Breath-taking Palácio da Pena is a beacon for affluent class in Portugal

Palácio da Pena located in Sintra Portugal

The Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace) is a must-see landmark. Opened in 1854, the palace stands proudly above the town of Sintra as an expression of 19th-century romanticism.

From the palace, take a day trip to the Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors) and experience this 10th-century clifftop Moorish castle. Originally an important strategic point during the Reconquista, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape at this popular tourist destination.

The nearby Quinta da Regaleira, not far from the town centre, provides a perfect vantage point over the UNESCO World Heritage landscapes of the Serra de Sintra mountain range. You'll also find the popular 'Initiation Well', the ceremonial site turned tourist attraction.

Once back in the main town, why not enjoy some fine dining in one of Sintra’s Michelin star restaurants?

The acclaimed Midori restaurant offers ‘Portuguese cuisine with a Japanese soul’, where customers can enjoy two tasting menus which promise to showcase a range of bold dishes.

Shoppers will feel at home at Alegro Sintra, a modern shopping centre brimming with trendy boutiques, consumer electronics shops and a cinema amongst much more.

The town also has a range of traditional cafes and bars allowing you to soak up the authentic Iberian Peninsula atmosphere.

Relocating to Sintra has seen new wealth and investment

Sunset at Sintra Coast, Portugal

Those looking for a permanent move to Sintra can browse a wide selection of real estate for sale. From cosy apartments to magnificent villas and estates, there is something for everyone here. Luxurious housing can be found anywhere between €600,000 and €7,000,000.

Those looking to enjoy the bustling town will want to find a property within the main town, whilst those prioritising views and surroundings can find what they’re looking for in the Sintra mountains nearby.

Rental costs and nightlife

Rooftop dining is popular frequent in Sintra, Portugal

For visiting friends and family, then one of the town’s many boutique hotels, rental villas, and townhouses will guarantee a relaxing stay. The 5-star Tivoli Palácio de Seteais stands out, as guests can stay in the 18th-century palace, decorated with antique furniture and artwork. Guests can expect to pay €500 a night.

Thanks to the town’s proximity to central Lisbon and convenient train station, you’re never too far from the capital’s vibrant nightlife, tourist attractions, and business centres. A €3 train ticket will take you into the city in half an hour, with a journey by car or tourist bus cutting that down to just 20 minutes.

International schools seeing a upsurge in interest from new wealth

Sintra plays host to some of Portugal’s premier international schools, including the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon and the TASIS Portugal International School. Those settling in the area can rest assured their child receives a high-quality education.

Outside of education, the town boasts impressive infrastructure. Numerous hospitals, a range of public transport and much more ensure that no sacrifices need to be made when making this World Heritage site your home or holiday destination.

Visa Options

The Sintra lifestyle has been adopted by many through the Golden Visa program – and is proving equally as popular with those securing a place on Portugal’s Non-Habitual Residency scheme or applying for a D7 visa or its counterpart, the D8 visa, for digital nomads.
