King’s College School Cascais kicked off its new academic year with the unveiling of its brand new €75 million purpose-built site.

The 40,000 square metre campus “rivals the best in the world” according to the International Education Group, which runs both it and a host of other international educational establishments around the world.

Among its new facilities are “university-grade” science laboratories, “technology-rich” classrooms and modern creative and performing arts studios.

It also has a host of sporting facilities which include a heated indoor 25-metre swimming pool, full-sized football and rugby pitches, sports pavilion plus tennis and basketball courts.

The investment, the biggest in a school in Portugal, underlines a growing demand for top-quality international education in Portugal as the nation continues to see interest from affluent expats.

With many of those taking advantage of the likes of the Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme or the IFICI (NHR 2.0) tax regime, the need for international schools – offering internationally recognised qualifications with teaching in both English and Portuguese - has grown significantly in recent years.

Cascais has long been a hugely popular draw for expats, drawn to its range of luxury real estate, vibrant culture, beautiful coastline and proximity to Portugal’s capital Lisbon – a little over a 30-minute drive away.

It is also among the first private international schools in Portugal to now offer a boarding programme – accommodating up to 50 students aged 13 and over.

John Leitão, CEO of the Inspired Education Group in Portugal, said: "Our aim is to foster innovation, build confidence, and help young minds learn and grow so they can thrive in the world.

“For the first time, Portugal has a school that, in terms of infrastructure and quality, competes with the best in the world.

“The investment carried out reflects our commitment to providing the country with a world-class education infrastructure, with state-of-the-art technology and facilities of excellence, providing a unique academic, cultural and international experience.”

The school offers students a blended curriculum that combines the Cambridge International curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Portugal now hosts over 50 international schools across the country, with the majority concentrated around Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve.

This expansion reflects the country's growing international community and its appeal as a relocation destination.
