Life and luxury in Lisbon is attracting internationals looking to relocate

The capital of Portugal, Lisbon seamlessly intertwines its rich history with a vibrant contemporary scene.

Little wonder, then, it has become a popular destination for expats keen to explore its cobblestone streets, famous azulejos murals and the many Lisbon attractions.

The city manages to offer an endless stream of things to see and do whilst maintaining a laid-back atmosphere.

Whether you're considering moving to Lisbon or simply seeking a high-end boutique hotel, here's your Lisbon city guide.

For those with a taste for the finer things in life, Lisbon provides a host of Michelin star restaurants and upmarket bars. Alma is considered by many to be the city’s best, famous for its local meat and seafood dishes as well as an extensive hand-picked wine list.

Cafes are in no short supply, selling fresh coffee and baked goods including one of the nation’s finest exports, Pasteis de Nata, a delicious custard tart pastry.

Those in the mood for some cultural enlightenment can make a day trip to one of Lisbon’s numerous museums. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum houses paintings and sculptures from across Portugal and the world, making for a captivating day out.

The Chiado neighbourhood is particularly popular - known as the key museum and theatre district amongst other key tourist attractions.

You'll want to take a trip to the Belém area for the popular MAAT museum, alongside the famous 16th-century Torre de belém (Belém tower), a UNESCO world heritage site with picturesque Tagus river vistas.

The city’s preservation of its cultural heritage doesn’t mean you can’t find all the modern amenities you’ve come to expect from a major city.

Stroll through the bustling Avenida da Liberdade, the most expensive street to rent or buy property in the country, and you’ll find all the luxury retailers, including Rolex and Louis Vuitton.

Those looking for something a little different can visit the Lx Factory, a once abandoned industrial area turned independent shopping hub, to explore a range of unique and arty retailers to expand your art collection.

Real Estate values in Lisbon for wealthy international investors

Being the capital city, real estate in Lisbon is abundant but at a premium. Expats heading to Lisbon may find a one-bedroom apartment is all they need, where there are a range of lavish apartments and boutique property options available for anywhere between €150,000 to €1,000,000 to buy.

As for larger houses and villas, expect to part with anywhere between €800,000 and €7,000,000, depending on location and size.

If you’re expecting guests to visit, then you’ll have no trouble finding a luxury 5-star hotel for them to relax in.

Top hotels such as The One Palácio da Anunciada, will set you back roughly €450 a night.

Portuguese Visa Options - Plan your Future

All are seeing increasing demand courtesy of Portugal’s hugely successful Golden Visa scheme as well as the likes of its Non-Habitual Residency (NHR) program, D7 visa or the D8 Digital Nomad Visa: growing number of affluent digital nomads moving for a better life not set by boundaries.

Some of the best neighbourhoods in central Lisbon include Baixa, Bairro Alto, and Príncipe Real.

These spots are home to a mix of picturesque streets, a wide variety of shops and boutiques, and a vibrant nightlife.

Parks and green spaces are dotted around the city and provide an area for relaxation and leisure. The Jardim do Torel is a19th-century botanical garden with views over the city.

Wherever you choose to stay in Lisbon, the affordable metro system means you’re never too far from anywhere in the city.

You can also utilise the extensive tram system to travel the city in style - just be sure to skip Tram 28, regarded in many city guides as one of the famous tourist traps!

Lisbon's well-connected train station makes a day trip to the likes of Sintra, Cascais or the Algarve a simple task.
