Porto crowned ‘Europe’s Friendliest City’, according to recent survey

When searching for a new place to call home or to explore, often it’s the dramatic views and delicious food that catch the eye.

And according to a major global survey by travel experts Time Out, there’s one European city where visitors and locals alike feel the most welcome: Porto.

A recent poll of more than 18,500 people from around the world asked residents to rate their home city on its friendliness and sense of welcome. The results placed Porto at the very top spot in Europe, with an impressive 85% of locals agreeing their city is welcoming and friendly.

This recognition comes alongside a strong showing for Portugal overall. Lisbon also made the European top ten, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation for hospitality.

Both cities were recently recognised as Europe’s best city breaks at the World Travel Awards — and the survey suggests it’s not just the scenery, food or weather drawing people in, but the way they're treated once they arrive.

This acclaim will come as no surprise to anyone who has visited Porto, Lisbon, or anywhere in Portugal, for that matter.

According to the 2025 Global Peace Index, Portugal is ranked as the seventh safest and most peaceful country in the world and has consistently placed in the top 10 globally since 2015.
