A recent study by TUI ranked the pair among Europe’s best for quality family time, highlighting a way of life that increasingly appeals to those thinking beyond short stays.
The research focused on practical factors such as parks, family-friendly accommodation and children’s entertainment.
Lisbon came out on top with a score of 9.16 out of 10, supported by a high number of green spaces and accessible leisure options.
Porto followed closely in third place with 9.01, offering a similar mix of outdoor areas and family-oriented infrastructure, along with easy access to the coast.
Both Lisbon and Porto also recently featured in the Happy City Index 2026.
In Lisbon, families can move easily between neighbourhood parks, cafés and cultural spaces without long commutes or complicated planning.
Porto offers a slightly slower pace, where riverside walks and nearby beaches such as Matosinhos become part of a regular routine rather than a special outing.
The study also found that families tend to favour activities such as theme parks, boat trips and outdoor experiences when travelling.

In Portugal, these are not limited to holidays. The climate, layout of the cities and strong emphasis on public space make it easier for families to build these moments into everyday life.
This is one reason why many visitors begin to look at Portugal differently after spending time there. What starts as a family break often raises the question of whether a longer-term move could offer a better balance.
The same qualities that make a city enjoyable for a week can translate into a more manageable and connected lifestyle over time.
For parents, that can mean more time outdoors with children, less reliance on cars, and a stronger sense of community. While practical considerations such as schools and healthcare remain important – both of which are well served in Portugal - lifestyle is often the deciding factor.
Other cities in the ranking, including Naples, Catania and Barcelona, continue to attract families looking for memorable trips. Portugal, however, is increasingly part of a different conversation. For many, it is not just a place to visit, but somewhere to build a life.
