A beach in in the Algarve has been ranked among the top five beaches in the world by Tripadvisor.
Praia da Falésia in Albufeira won the global recognition in the travel website’s annual Travellers’ Choice awards.
It came fifth in the prestigious list which is based on beach reviews submitted over the last 12 months.
Winners are determined by the volume and quality of ‘excellent’ reviews, reflecting the genuine experiences of travellers from around the world.
TripAdvisor praised the beach for its dramatic cliffs, sweeping stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters.
The beach is described as ideal for swimming and bodyboarding, while the clifftop paths offer striking vantage points from which to admire the Algarve’s unique coastal landscapes.
Stretching for several kilometres along the coastline near Albufeira, Falésia’s distinctive red and ochre cliffs have become one of Portugal’s most photographed natural landmarks.
Taking the top spot globally was Isla Pasion, a private beach near Cozumel in Mexico. Despite a US$45 entry fee for a day pass, it was voted the world’s favourite.
Second and third places were awarded to Greece’s Elafonissi and Balos Lagoon, further underlining the strong Mediterranean presence in this year’s rankings.
For Portugal, the accolade reinforces the Algarve’s status as a cornerstone of the country’s tourism appeal.
The region continues to attract millions of visitors each year, drawn by its climate, safety, infrastructure and high-quality hospitality offering.
Tourism remains a vital pillar of the national economy, supporting jobs, local businesses and regional development.
