Two of Portugal’s celebrated cities have been named in the top 10 of Europe’s happiest cities.
The listing was compiled by Time Out magazine, which polled 18,500 city dwellers and asked them ‘does your city make you happy?’.
Porto was ranked third in the list and Lisbon eighth.
In the global top 20, Porto came 12th.
It comes just days after Porto was named Europe’s‘ friendliest city’.

Explains Time Out: “What is it that makes a city worth living in? Is it the transport, green space, arts scene or nightlife? Its beauty, its sense of community, or the diversity and inclusivity it champions? Well, we’d argue all of those factors are crucial, but there’s one thing that they all contribute to above all – our happiness.”
Porto’s stunning architecture, vibrant culinary scene, welcoming nature and rich history has long made it a popular destination for those seeking to move to Portugal.
Meanwhile, capital Lisbon has long been a melting pot of the historic old and vibrant new – a recipe which has seen it become a popular destination for young and old alike.
The varied range of luxury real estate options in both have made the two cities desirable for investors and entrepreneurs.

Paul Stannard, founder and chairman of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club, said: “Portugal is a lot more than just natural beauty and nice weather; it’s a truly special place to live and work. Is it any surprise the people who live there are among the happiest in the world?
“Porto and Lisbon are just two incredible places in a country where there are magical places to discover around every corner.
“The abundance of English-language speakers in the country also helps to make newcomers feel a part of the local community from day one.”
Globally, the happiest city in the world, according to the survey, was Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
For those looking to make the move to Portugal or to invest in the country, opportunities are abundant.
