Portugal has joined the list of nations where expats experience the lowest stress levels, according to a new report.
The ranking by travel website TravelBinger sees Portugal rise up the ranks to enter the six top countries - joining the likes of the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and Finland.
Its inclusion comes as little surprise to those familiar with its reputation for warmth, affordability and relaxed lifestyle.
A defining reason Portugal is considered one of the least stressful destinations is the ease with which expats integrate into local life.
More than three-quarters of newcomers reported feeling at home, and over 80% say they feel genuinely welcome.
Portugal also ranks seventh worldwide in the most recent Global Peace Index for safety and security.

Meanwhile, the Wealthy Expats in Portugal Survey Report 2025 found that the Happiness Rating in the country was 88%, notably higher than the average of 72% worldwide.
Although the cost of living has increased slightly in recent years, average monthly expenses of around £538 keep Portugal among Western Europe’s most financially manageable countries.
This sense of affordability plays a major role in reducing the everyday financial strain that many expats feel elsewhere.
Real estate remains comparatively accessible, everyday essentials are reasonably priced, and salaries stretch further than in many neighbouring nations.
Beyond the practicalities, Portugal’s atmosphere plays a significant role in supporting wellbeing. With around 300 days of sunshine a year, residents enjoy an outdoor lifestyle that naturally supports both physical and mental health.
Its healthcare system is highly regarded too, with a host of top quality private options available.

Portugal also offers a wide variety of visa options for those looking to make the move.
Portugal’s D8 digital nomad visa is perfect for remote workers and freelancers looking to work from abroad with access to visa-free EU travel.
For retirees or those wanting to utilise passive income, Portugal’s D7 visa allows non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens to live in Portugal and bring their eligible family members.
For affluent families, investors, and entrepreneurs, Portugal’s Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme provides a clear pathway to permanent dual EU citizenship, visa-free EU travel, and a minimum stay requirement of just seven days per year.
A Golden Visa can be acquired with an investment of €500,000 in one or more alternative investment funds eligible for the programme.
