Portugal’s tourism sector continues to reach new heights, reinforcing the country’s position as one of Europe’s most attractive travel destinations.
Recent data from Statistics Portugal revealed that during 2025 it welcomed 32.5 million visitors, a 3% rise over 2024, with particularly strong arrivals during the summer season.
In December 2025, Portugal rounded out the year with 1.9 million visitors and 4.2 million overnight stays.
Strong international demand, combined with a strategic focus on sustainability and year-round tourism, has helped drive record visitor numbers and further cement tourism as a key pillar of the Portuguese economy.
This new data comes after Portugal was named ‘Economy of the Year’ by The Economist for 2025, recognising the country’s significant growth.
Portugal’s economy, including the tourism sector, has seen significant investment courtesy of the Portugal Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme.
Applicants can invest a minimum of €500,000 in eligible alternative investment funds, many of which focus on Portugal’s key growth sectors.

Paul Sheedy, special advisor at the Portugal Future Fund, an alternative investment fund approved for Portugal’s Golden Visa programme, said: “Golden Visa investors are supporting economic growth, boosting industries such as hospitality, tourism, renewable energy, tech, as well as media and international events.
“These investors are supporting Portugal’s continued growth while securing benefits for themselves and their families.”
While the Algarve remains synonymous with Portugal’s traditional sun-and-sea holidays, the country’s tourism success increasingly reflects a broader geographic appeal.
Cities such as Lisbon and Porto continue to attract visitors for their vibrant culture, historic architecture, and gastronomy, while regions like Madeira and the Azores are gaining popularity among travellers seeking nature, adventure, and eco-tourism experiences.
Central to this growth is the government’s strategy to promote Portugal as a destination that offers far more than a seasonal getaway.

Through initiatives such as ‘Year-Round Portugal’, led by the Ministry of Economy and Turismo de Portugal, the country is highlighting diverse attractions across all regions.
Digital promotion has also played a vital role. National tourism authorities have invested heavily in online campaigns and global marketing initiatives to showcase Portugal’s destinations and experiences.
Accommodation options are evolving alongside this growth. Portugal has seen a rise in luxury hotels, boutique guesthouses, and serviced apartments, reflecting the growing demand for high-end travel experiences.
At the same time, cruise tourism continues to expand, with Lisbon emerging as a prominent port of call for Mediterranean itineraries.
