A UX/UI digital expert working remotely on a freelance and SME basis for several prominent international corporations, she wanted to live somewhere that would also give her space to pursue her long-held passion for painting, ideally in a location as visually inspiring as Lisbon and its surrounding coastline.
After the COVID lockdown period, and craving a real change from the UK, Alice made the move to Lisbon. Since relocating, she's felt genuinely revitalised, both personally and creatively.
However, as her new life took shape, she realised she didn't fully understand how to make the most of her financial situation, particularly with passive income such as dividends from her UK company.
It was through conversations with other Digital Nomad expats in Portugal that Alice first realised something didn't add up: her tax position appeared notably higher than many others in a similar situation.
This prompted her to start exploring options within Portugal's visa and tax framework for someone in her position, a freelance, internationally earning individual with UK-based passive income, to better understand whether her situation could be structured more efficiently.

Around the same time, a second, more personal challenge emerged. Alice's ageing mother, who needed regular support and attention, expressed a wish to follow her daughter to Lisbon. The distance between the UK and Portugal had already been a source of worry for Alice, and the prospect of coordinating a second relocation, this time for an elderly parent with her own care needs, added real complexity to an already significant life transition.
Facing both a financial question and a family logistics challenge, Alice turned to Portugal Pathways for coordinated support.
On the financial side, Portugal Pathways introduced Alice to tax specialists who could properly assess her freelance and passive income structure, helping her understand what options existed under Portugal's visa and tax framework and how her situation compared to peers in similar circumstances.
On the family side, Portugal Pathways helped Alice and her mother think through the practicalities of a second relocation, from logistics to timing, so they could arrive at an arrangement that worked for both of them.
With clearer financial guidance in place and a plan for her mother's move taking shape, Alice was able to settle more fully into her new life in Lisbon, painting, working, and building a future she felt genuinely excited about, without the financial uncertainty that had been weighing on her.
